New Menus In Mumbai Restaurants You Must Not Miss This SeasonMumbai has finally bid goodbye to monsoon and is eagerly waiting to feel a nip in the air. The city that never sleeps can seem even more awake in these months, as it welcomes a time (hopefully free) of intense heat and rain. People are more confident about spending time outdoors and enjoy various types of indulgences. Winter here is a festive season for multiple reasons and what better way to celebrate than with food? Several restaurants, bars and cafes in Mumbai have announced new menus - some related to the season and some simply for novelty. Here are some of the best ones to check out:
Here Are Select New Menus In Mumbai Restaurants To Try In Winter 2024:Indian Accent, BKCIndian Accent has a new Chef s Tasting menu that you cannot afford to miss this season. It celebrates the flavours of the streets of India, with festive and regal twists that will leave you curious to discover more. We were left impressed once again, by Chef Rijul Gulati s craft. We had the opportunity to taste both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions of the menu. Both begin with a trio of bite-sized treats inspired by popular street eats: indori khopra pattice, Ladakhi apricot samosa and a mini raj kachori. In the veg menu, these are followed by Chef s innovative take on Matar Paneer, a delicious serving of Tawa Jackfruit with sattu roti, and a luxurious Chenna Morel with saffron cream, topped with fresh truffles.
For the non-vegetarians, the initial appetisers are followed by three varied delicacies (which we are still dreaming about) - Kanyakumari Crab, Bihari Tash Meat, and Chicken Pakoda. The main course consisted of Kashmiri Milk Lamb, Black Dairy Dal and Smoked Eggplant raita. For vegetarians, the meat is replaced by Chowpatty In A Bowl , a twist on Mumbai s beloved street foods: pav bhaji, bhel and more. The mains also include Indian Accent s signature kulchas, which were simply delicious! The dessert course featured Mahabaleshwar Strawberry Cassata, Kaju Katli Cannoli and Soft Baked Chocolate with Basundi (which is worth absolutely waiting for).

Bandra Born started as an exciting 12-week pop-up and later established itself as a permanent restaurant and bar on Chapel Road. It has already become a beloved hotspot for locals and tourists. This October, it celebrated its 1st anniversary with a revamp of sorts. We had the chance to visit the space and learn more about all the cool new things Chef Gresham Fernandes and his team have curated. Firstly, Bandra Born is now housing India s (and the world s) first dedicated Mahua bar. Guests can now discover the wonders of this indigenous spirit through a thrilling lineup of cocktails that include drinks like the Mahua Colada, Mahua Mule, Tribal Negroni, and many others. Bandra Born s regular drinks menu has also undergone some changes. New entries include Dot s Dodol, It s Always XXXmas in Bandra, Guah-wah, Zig Zag Nights, and other cocktails that pay homage to Bandra and celebrate Chef Gresham s roots here.
The food menu has some delicious additions too. We highly recommend the Watermelon Ceviche, Duck Stroop waffle and the Anglo Indian Coorgi Pork. A special shout-out to the wonderfully crisp Mutton Panroll among the savouries and the delightful Complex Kela among the desserts. We can t wait to return and discover more favourites.

Hurrem s has a decadent new menu celebrating Turkish flavours through savoury and sweet treats. We spent a cosy evening sampling some of them at its outlet in Jio World Drive. We recommend the wholesome LentilSoup (especially in this season), the airy Mushroom Vol-Au-Vents and the comforting Potato & Cheese Pide. If you want to go beyond its signature baklavas for dessert, opt for the Saffron San Sebastian Cheesecake or the Turkish Coffee Chocolate Cake. We especially enjoyed the distinctive texture of the latter - but note that is best paired with a beverage. There are Turkish Teas and Coffee available, among other options. For a cooling sip, choose the lightly creamy Levantine Lemonade - which we would gladly return for. Although we didn t have the tummy space to taste them, we must admit that the newly launched Baklava Sundaes (loaded with 3 scoops of ice cream and several other yummy elements), looked incredibly tempting.

Bandra s artistic foodie haven on Chapel Road, Mokai, has recently unveiled its Matcha menu. Matcha beverages were already a part of the regular menu (and we had quite liked them when we visited the cafe). However, the new launch adds an experiential dimension and more options to the list. Guests can now whisk their own matcha with authentic bamboo whisks and then choose from the extensive matcha drink selection or craft their own on the spot. Mokai has imported ceremonial grade matcha from the lush tea fields of Uji, Japan, for the same. Guests can enjoy various types of matcha fusions. For instance, The Pistachio Matcha promises to be a rich delight with Sicilian pistachio paste, house blend espresso, and organic honey. The Matcha Misu combines fresh matcha mascarpone, milk, vanilla essence, condensed milk, and house-made ladyfingers. Other highlights include the Taro Boba Matcha, Mango Matcha, Hot Madagascar Vanilla Beans Matcha, Ice Cloud Matcha, Malaysian Jaggery Matcha, etc.

MumbaiSwaad by Ishaara: An Ode To India s Culinary HeritageIshaara is hosting an exclusive pop-up this November that food enthusiasts shouldn t miss. We had the chance to attend a preview dinner for Swaad by Ishaara, a 7-course dining experience curated by celebrated culinary expert Rushina Munshaw Ghildiyal. Each course is rooted in specific ingredients, flavours or a sense of taste, evoking the rich histories of how food has evolved over centuries. Chef Rushina spotlights lesser-known delights, through foraged ingredients and ancient recipes that are given amazing twists. Our meal begins with Katu (Bitter/Astringent), a course that features a restorative broth made more delicious with the seasonal addition of fresh turmeric. Next is Namak (Salt), spotlighting Patra Shaka, Australian Salt Bush, and Uttarakhand s Pisyoon Loon. It is served with Chef Rushina s two signature types of salt that we proceeded to pair with every dish that came later! The Khatai (Sour) course - one of our favourites - showed us just how diverse tanginess can be through the yumminess of Gondhoraj butter, Australian lemon myrtle, and Ladakhi Seabuckthorn with Apricot Chutney. It was followed by the Mirch (Spice) course, featuring the long pepper (Pipali) and the fiery Naga chilli served with a barnyard millet porridge from Uttarakhand.
The Tadka course, while celebrating the art of tempering, also gave us the chance to taste the enriching earthiness of Pahadi-style wild tubers. The mains in Svada are inspired by recipes from the Pakadarpana of Nala, a legendary Indian treatise on cooking. The sweet finale - Sugandha - was a lip-smacking one. The layers of kurmura chikki, malai and gajak are a reference to offerings mentioned in the Ramayana, nodding to tradition in a beautiful way. Each element of every course has been not cooked with passion, but also sourced in ways that pay homage to their origins. This is a meal we re not going to forget for a long time and we highly recommend you experience it while you still have the chance. -- Toshita Sahni

6 Ways To Know If Your Food Is Stale Or Not
We ve all experienced that moment of doubt while staring at leftovers or pantry items, wondering, “Is this still good to eat?” As much as we hate to waste food, there are times when we have to part ways with it when it s past its prime. When there s no clear expiration date, we sometimes have to rely on our instincts and decide whether we want to eat the food. Some signs of food spoilage are pretty obvious, but others require a bit of attention. If you re looking for ways to identify food spoilage, then you ve come to the right place! Here are 6 easy ways to assess the state of your food.

Here Are 6 Easy Ways To Know If Your Food Is Stale Or Not1. The Sniff TestThe first and most obvious thing to do when spotting stale food is to smell it. Fresh food has a natural, pleasant aroma, while stale or spoiled food often smells musty or sour. Foods that are most likely to go bad include dairy, bread, and meats. A quick sniff can save you from an unpleasant taste. If the smell makes you hesitant to try the food, it s a clear sign that it has gone bad.
2. Check For MouldIt goes without saying—if you spot mould on your food, it s automatically a no-go. Mold is easy to spot as it often shows up as green, white, or fuzzy patches on bread, fruits, cheese, and other perishable items. If you think scraping off the mouldy part will make the food safe to eat, think again. Mould can spread deeper than it appears. If consumed, it can cause severe digestive problems. Always check for mould before eating.
3. Analyze The TextureHow food feels can be a clear indicator of its freshness. Bread that has become hard, chips that have lost their crunch, and vegetables that feel slimy are strong signs of spoiled food. Fresh food has a firm, vibrant texture, while stale food might feel soggy or overly dry. Not only that, but even cooked dishes can indicate the freshness of food. Trust your hands and feel your food before eating.
4. Taste It (But Carefully!)If food looks and smells okay but you re still not sure, a taste test could be your next step. Take a small bite and analyze the taste. Stale food usually tastes flat, sour, or just off. This method works well for biscuits or bread, but be cautious when testing perishable items. If the taste feels uneasy or strange, spit it out immediately and discard the food.
5. Look For Expiry DatesWhen buying perishable food, expiry dates are a great indicator of when to dispose of it. Check the “best before” or “use by” dates to assess how fresh the food is. While some items, like dry grains or canned goods, might be safe to use slightly past their best-before date, perishables like dairy, eggs, and meat should be discarded. Rely on your visual and smell instincts for better judgment.
6. Examine The PackagingBelieve it or not, packaging can tell you a lot about food safety. For canned or sealed goods, look out for dents, leaks, or any disfigurements. These could indicate that the food has spoiled due to bacterial growth. Always check for damage to seals, zippers, or vacuum packaging. If the packaging looks compromised, it s best to discard the food.

Couple Spends Nearly $15,000 On Their Wedding s Vegan Menu, Guests Order Pizza Instead
Weddings often seem dreamy in pictures and videos, however, in reality, these can be quite dramatic. In a recent Reddit post, a 28-year-old woman (Reddit user Conscious-Option-400) claimed that she and her husband had planned a 5-course gourmet vegan menu for their wedding reception last week, spending nearly $15,000 on the food alone. The menu included dishes like mushroom wellington, truffle risotto, roasted vegetable tarts, etc. However, the guests were disappointed with the all-vegan menu and ended up ordering 20 pizzas .
The bride further claimed that they had not previously disclosed details of the menu because the couple wanted people to enjoy it without prejudice. The bride shared that while the food was being served, her 32-year-old brother Tom brought in pizzas and started distributing them to guests, announcing Real food for anyone who wants it! When confronted, he said that their aunt had texted him that all the food is just vegetables and they couldn t let people go hungry at a wedding. Feeling heartbroken, the bride shared that she ended up crying in the bathroom.
My husband asked Tom and the cousins to leave. This caused a scene, and now half the family is calling us stuck-up and saying we ruined our wedding by pushing our beliefs on everyone, the Redditor added.

After reading the post, some Redditors were not convinced if the event was true. While the authenticity of the incident has not been confirmed yet, the post has generated quite a stir in the comments section.
A comment read, $15,000 on food at a wedding?! What a waste of money.
A Redditor said, Be honest, you didn t tell anyone about the menu because you knew they wouldn t like it/come if you did. Another chimed in, I mean ordering pizzas was out of line but you hid it on purpose knowing people wouldn t like it. Yes, it s your special day but being deceptive doesn t help anyone.

Here Are 5 Health Benefits Of Olives1. They Are Good For Your HeartOlives are like a huge hug for your heart. This is because they are packed with monosaturated fats and polyphenols which can help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) in your body. As per a 2022 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, replacing animal fats - such as butter, cream, and mayonnaise - with olive oil may have a significant health benefit. In fact, people who used more than ½ tablespoon of olive oil daily in their diet had a 19 per cent lower risk of demise from heart disease. So, go ahead! Consume olives and your heart will thank you.
2. Essential For A Healthy SkinOlives are a powerhouse of antioxidants! Why? Since they are packed with vitamin E and polyphenols, olives can keep free radicals at bay while reducing oxidative stress. According to a 2009 study published in Clinics in Dermatology, consuming olive in the form of extra virgin oil can help improve skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema while moisturising the skin. What does that mean for you? Healthier and glowing skin!
3. Keeps Your Tummy HappyDo you have stomach issues? Then bid them farewell! Olives have a high fibre content so they can keep your digestion smooth and gut happy. As per a 2022 research paper, fibre helps regulate bowel movements, and the antioxidants present in olives can help reduce inflammation in your digestive tract. So, keep your digestive system happy by incorporating olives into your diet.
4. Makes Your Bone StrongerNot just digestive and skin benefits, but olives can boost your bone health too! According to a 2014 research paper published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, the plant compound present in olives can help prevent bone density and osteoporosis – two conditions that become pretty prevalent with age. Moreover, the small amount of calcium and vitamin K in olives adds to its benefits.
5. Keeps Weight In CheckYes, olives can be packed with calories but they are still a smart snack. The healthy fats and fibre present in them can keep you fuller for longer, helping curb those mid-afternoon cravings. Plus, the monosaturated fats present in them can boost your metabolism and boost fat loss. So, the next time you choose to eat that bag of chips, think about it consciously and swap it for a handful of olives.

How Secret Ingredient Is Redefining Restaurant Success - An Exclusive With The Founders
The restaurant industry is experiencing an unprecedented boom, with more people dining out than ever before. This shift is fueled by evolving lifestyles, rising disposable incomes, and the growing desire for unique culinary experiences. Today, customers are not just seeking great food; they crave memorable experiences that engage all their senses. As a result, restaurants are going beyond traditional dining by investing in ambience, themed settings, innovative menus, and cutting-edge technologies to captivate their patrons.
However, this surge in demand has also led to a fiercely competitive landscape where only the fittest survive. The pressure to stand out and deliver consistently exceptional experiences is immense. Restaurants must constantly innovate, refine their operations, and adapt to changing trends to maintain their edge. This is easier said than done in an industry where customer expectations are sky-high, and missteps can be costly.
This is where consultancy firms like Secret Ingredient step in to make a difference. By offering expert guidance in branding, operations, menu development, and customer engagement strategies, they empower restaurants to compete, survive, and thrive. Whether it s crafting a unique identity or streamlining processes, Secret Ingredient provides the tools and insights needed to not just stay afloat but flourish in this competitive arena.
Founded by industry veterans Sid Mathur (Director - Advisory & Strategy) and Kula Naidu (Director - Conceptualization & Branding), Secret Ingredient has carved a unique niche as one of India s premier restaurant and food consultancy firms. With over six years of hands-on experience, Sid and Kula have leveraged their expertise in running restaurants, consulting, and branding to provide end-to-end solutions tailored to the needs of the dynamic F&B sector. Whether it s a small cloud kitchen or a luxurious five-star property, the firm s proven track record includes collaborations with renowned names like Swiggy, Olive Group, and Khyber Hotel Gulmarg, among others.
At its core, Secret Ingredient prides itself on offering more than just technical know-how. Their approach is deeply rooted in understanding the individual needs of each client, prioritizing sustainable strategies, and nurturing long-term success. From conceptualization to launch, and menu revamps to staffing solutions, the firm has been instrumental in transforming businesses across various food ecosystems, including hotels, malls, and schools.
Sid and Kula share their journey, experiences, insights, and aspirations in a candid Q&A below.
Q&A with Secret Ingredient Founders Sid Mathur and Kula NaiduQ: Sid, what inspired you to transition from a career in private banking to the F&B industry?
Sid: My love for food started early, thanks to my upbringing in London with well-traveled parents. Even during my years in banking, I found myself gravitating toward the culinary world, constantly exploring new restaurants and cuisines. When I moved back to India, the passion became undeniable. Partnering with Riyaaz Amlani at Impresario Entertainment & Hospitality and running Social further deepened my understanding of the business. However, I noticed a lack of professional, structured food consultancy in the market, which inspired me to establish Secret Ingredient in 2010.
Q: Kula, as someone with international roots, how has your background influenced your approach
Kula: Growing up in Malaysia and being immersed in South Indian heritage exposed me to diverse flavours and cuisines from an early age. This multicultural foundation has shaped my understanding of food and branding. After moving to Delhi in 2007, I explored various ventures, eventually launching Asian Haus under FoodCraft. Over time, I realized that consulting offered a more dynamic and creative platform, which led me to collaborate with Sid on Secret Ingredient. Together, we ve built a firm that thrives on innovation and tailored solutions.
Q: What sets Secret Ingredient apart in the competitive food consulting space?
Sid: The biggest differentiator is our holistic approach. While many consultants focus solely on kitchen operations or menu development, we address the full spectrum of a restaurant s needs- from branding and concept creation to operational efficiencies. Moreover, we re not just consultants; we see ourselves as an extension of our client s team, genuinely invested in their success.
Kula: Another key factor is the breadth of our experience. We ve worked with everything from budget-friendly cloud kitchens to ultra-luxury establishments. This versatility allows us to adapt to various scales and styles, ensuring each project gets the personalized attention it deserves.
Q: What challenges do restaurateurs face today that Secret Ingredient aims to address?
Sid: The restaurant industry has always been volatile. For every successful restaurant, two or three struggle to survive. Common issues include poor financial planning, inefficient staff training, and a lack of clear branding or strategy. Restaurateurs often get caught up in day-to-day operations, unable to see the bigger picture. That s where we come in- to provide clarity, streamline processes, and enhance the likelihood of success.
Kula: Additionally, the market has become more competitive with a younger generation of restaurateurs entering the space. They bring fresh ideas but often lack operational experience. We help bridge that gap, ensuring they avoid common pitfalls and make informed decisions from the get-go.
Q: Could you share a memorable project that turned out to be most gratifying?
Sid: One of the most gratifying projects was our partnership with Select CityWalk. Initially, we were tasked with conceptualizing a food court. The success of that venture led to a seven-year relationship where we eventually managed the entire mall. The trust and recognition we gained through this project were incredible.
Kula: Another standout was our work with Swiggy. We helped them conceptualize their first brand and continue to collaborate on various projects. It s exciting to work with such a forward-thinking team and play a role in shaping the food delivery landscape.
Q: You manage your own restaurants while consulting others. How do you balance the two?
Kula: It s definitely a balancing act! Running our own brands has given us invaluable insights that we bring to our consultancy work. For instance, opening Niko, our Pan-Asian space, was a hands-on learning experience. It allowed us to experiment with ideas we later applied to client projects.
Sid: While both aspects are rewarding, our heart lies in consulting. Helping clients succeed, especially those who are starting from scratch, is deeply fulfilling. Watching them grow and thrive is what drives us.
Q: What does the future hold for Secret Ingredient?
Sid: We re in a growth phase, expanding our team and looking to establish a pan-India presence with regional offices. We re also exploring international opportunities to bring our expertise to global markets.
Kula: Another exciting avenue is offering management services for restaurants. Many clients have fantastic concepts but lack the operational bandwidth to sustain them. By managing their businesses, we can ensure that the time, money, and effort they ve invested are not wasted.
Q: Any advice for budding restaurateurs?
Sid: Research thoroughly and plan meticulously. Passion is important, but success in this industry requires a clear strategy, efficient operations, and the ability to adapt to trends.
Kula: Don t hesitate to seek professional help. Partnering with a consultancy like ours can save you from costly mistakes and set you on the path to success much faster.
With a blend of expertise, creativity, and genuine care for client success, Secret Ingredient continues to redefine food consulting in India. Are you planning to open a restaurant or revamp your food business? You know whom to contact.

The team led by Ferdinand von Meyenn, Professor of Nutrition and Metabolic Epigenetics at the varsity, found that fat cells remember the overweight state and can return to this state more easily .
The team first analysed fat cells from overweight mice and those that had shed their excess weight through dieting.
Their findings revealed that mice with these epigenetic markers regained weight more quickly when they again had access to a high-fat diet.
Epigenetic markers play a key role in determining which genes are active in our cells and which are not.
The study, published in the journal Nature, found that the mechanism works in similar ways in humans.
To explore, the team analysed fat tissue biopsies from formerly overweight people who had undergone stomach reduction or gastric bypass surgery. The results were consistent with those of the mice.
Von Meyenn noted that the simplest way to combat the phenomenon, is to avoid being overweight , especially for children, youth, and adults.
The researchers for the first time showed that fat cells possess an epigenetic memory of obesity . However, fat cells may not be alone with this ability, the team said.
They noted that the findings implied that the cells in the brain, blood vessels, or other organs may also have the ability to remember obesity and contribute to the effect -- an area that can be explored next.
Dry Fruit Production In Kinnaur Declines Amid Rising Apple Farming
Traditional produce from Kinnaur such as dry fruits and organic products, which were once a major attraction at the Lavi Fair held here, are gradually losing ground to apples, the farmers from the region have claimed. The production of traditional Kinnauri products has been declining as more people are shifting to cultivate new varieties of apples, said dry fruit sellers who continue to sell their goods in Rampur even after the fair has ended. Atul Negi from Leo village in Kinnaur, who has been bringing his produce to the fair for many years, noted that in the past, he would bring 12-15 quintals of apricots and three to four quintals of almonds.
However, this year, he brought only one quintal of apricots and 30 kg of almonds. Due to the drop in production, prices are rising, and producers are facing losses, he said. Kinnauri dry fruits like almonds, apricots, chilgoza, raj mash, peas, kala jeera, and shilajit were available at the fair, but in much smaller quantities compared to previous years. The high prices made them unaffordable for many, and most people were unable to purchase these items.
Yashwant Singh, a farmer from Rispa village, shared that he had been bringing dry fruits and organic products to the fair for the past four to five years. However, this year, he noticed a lack of market enthusiasm, with fewer customers showing interest in his goods. More and more people are now planting apples on their vacant land, he added. Horticulture experts suggest that dry fruit production requires more labour and has a higher cost of production, while new apple varieties are fast-growing, yielding good results. As a result, the area dedicated to dry fruits is shrinking.
Dr. Ashwani Kumar, an expert from the horticulture department, explained on Tuesday that newly imported apple varieties have a better yield and start bearing fruit within four to five years, offering growers quicker returns. Farmers are increasingly moving away from traditional produce, with many switching to apple cultivation each year, he said. Dr. Rajesh Jaiswal, a subject specialist from the Agriculture Department, said efforts are underway to encourage the cultivation of traditional produce by offering subsidies to farmers. He emphasised that these products have high nutritional and medicinal value, which is highly beneficial for health.

How To Protect Your Kidney When On Painkillers? Nutritionist Luke Coutinho Shares How
Many people frequently pop painkillers or over-the-counter medicines when having a headache or any kind of body ache. In some cases, you might be sick and would need to consume a dose of doctor-prescribed painkillers. In any case, it is important to note that consuming painkillers may come with certain side effects, which may negatively impact your kidneys. In a recent Instagram video, integrative lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho explains that chronic overuse of painkillers can lead to kidney failure or chronic kidney disease.
The kidney produces a chemical called prostaglandins which is used to protect the kidney. It is also a hormone that helps you with blood clotting and several other functions. As you use more and more painkillers, these prostaglandins start to reduce and that reduces the protective mechanism of your kidneys, leading to kidney disease, he explains in the video.

If you need to be on a painkiller because of any pain or treatment you are going through, there are certain things you can do to manage the side effects, as shared by Luke Coutinho.
Here Are 7 Diet And Lifestyle Changes To Follow While Taking Painkillers:1. Increase Your Water IntakeWhen you are on painkillers, increasing your water intake can help protect your kidneys. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, unless you have been put on a water restriction by a doctor.
2. Increase Calcium And Vitamins IntakeMost painkillers will deplete calcium, magnesium and vitamin D from your body, shares the expert. It is important to get those essential nutrients back into your diet through supplements or food, based on your doctor s advice.
3. No Smoking Or Drinking AlcoholIt is important to stop smoking and drinking alcohol, especially when you are on painkillers, as this can worsen the side effects.

4. Eat Nuts And VeggiesConsume a diet rich in vegetables, especially green leafy veggies. Eat lots of nuts because the healthy fats will also help protect your kidneys when you are on painkillers.
5. Moderate Protein IntakeMake sure you are eating protein-rich foods. However, it is best to consume a moderate amount of protein and not too much, explains Coutinho. Too much protein may put a load on the kidneys. Continue with moderate protein intake when you are continuously on painkillers.
6. Get Adequate SleepSleep is essential for recovery from your illness as well as kidney protection. Make sure you are sleeping deeply because it is when we sleep that the body goes through its natural repair and detoxification protocols.
7. Manage Stress
Avoid taking stress and try to calm down. If you are feeling stressed, try to relax your mind and body. Your overall relaxation takes the burden off all of your vital organs.
If you need to be on painkillers, make sure you are eating the right foods and making the right lifestyle changes. Do not misuse painkillers and always take these as per your doctor s prescription and direction.

Why Is Chewing Food Thoroughly So Important For Digestion?
Do you often feel bloated, tired after meals, or crave sweets? These discomforts might be more than just an aftereffect of what you ate-they could be signals from your body indicating that your digestion process is off track. The solution to many of these common digestive issues might be simpler than you think: chew your food more thoroughly. Many of us rush through meals, eating quickly and without paying attention to how we chew. However, chewing food thoroughly can play a pivotal role in preventing acidity, bloating, and indigestion, and even helping with sugar cravings. Nutritionist Ritika Kukreja explained this in an Instagram post.

Here s why chewing properly is so important for your digestive health:Digestion Starts in Your MouthContrary to what many people think, digestion doesn t just start when food reaches your stomach. It actually begins in your mouth. The first step is chewing, a process that breaks down food into smaller pieces to make it easier for your stomach and intestines to process. When you chew, you re not just physically breaking down food; you re also preparing it chemically for digestion.
Saliva, produced when you chew, contains enzymes that begin breaking down carbohydrates in food. These enzymes, particularly amylase, start the process of converting starches into simpler sugars, giving your digestive system a head start. Without proper chewing, food is swallowed in larger pieces, making it more difficult for your stomach to digest. This can lead to discomfort and a range of digestive problems like gas, bloating, constipation, and even food sensitivities or allergies.

Here Are 6 Benefits of Chewing ThoroughlyChewing may seem like a small part of the digestion process, but it has far-reaching effects on your overall health. Let s dive into the numerous benefits of chewing food slowly and thoroughly:
1. Activates Saliva EnzymesWhen you chew your food thoroughly, you stimulate the production of saliva, which contains digestive enzymes such as amylase. These enzymes help break down the food before it reaches your stomach, making the digestive process smoother and more efficient. This also leads to better nutrient absorption, as smaller food particles are easier for your body to digest.
2. Reduces BloatingBloating often occurs when your digestive system is struggling to break down food properly. When you chew food properly, you break it down into smaller, digestible pieces, which means your stomach doesn t have to work as hard. As a result, there s less chance of undigested food fermenting in your stomach or intestines, leading to gas and bloating. Thorough chewing also helps your stomach release digestive juices more efficiently, improving the breakdown of food.
3. Promotes Fullness and Prevents OvereatingChewing food thoroughly can help you feel fuller faster, which can prevent overeating. When you eat slowly and chew well, your body has more time to signal to your brain that you ve had enough to eat. This process takes about 20 minutes, so eating too quickly may lead to overeating before your body has a chance to register fullness. Chewing slowly helps you savour your meal, ensuring that you consume just the right amount.
4. Balances Blood Sugar LevelsChewing your food well can also help regulate your blood sugar levels. When food is broken down into smaller particles, glucose is released into your bloodstream more gradually. This steady release of sugar prevents sharp spikes in blood sugar that could lead to energy crashes, sugar cravings, and even insulin resistance over time. By chewing thoroughly, you support a balanced blood sugar level, which can also help reduce cravings for sugary foods.
5. Better Nutrient AbsorptionThe more thoroughly you chew your food, the better your body can absorb its nutrients. Chewing breaks down food into smaller pieces, allowing your stomach and intestines to do their job more efficiently. When food is broken down properly, your body can absorb vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients, which play a crucial role in your overall health. This means that thorough chewing doesn t just improve digestion; it also supports your body s nutritional needs.
6. Improved Gut HealthSaliva also contains a protein called Epithelial Growth Factor (EGF), which plays a vital role in the regeneration and repair of the gut lining. When you chew thoroughly, you increase the production of EGF, which helps maintain the health of your digestive tract. A healthy gut lining is essential for preventing conditions like leaky gut syndrome, and it can also enhance your body s ability to absorb nutrients from food.

How Much Should You Chew? So, how much should you chew to reap these digestive benefits? While the ideal number of chews can vary depending on the type of food, experts generally recommend chewing each bite around 32 times. This is based on the number of chews often suggested in studies for optimal digestion. However, foods vary in texture, and some may require more chewing:
For tougher foods like nuts or meat, you may need to chew up to 40 times to break them down adequately. Softer foods, like watermelon, may only require 5-10 chews before swallowing.
Remember, the goal is to break down food as much as possible before it enters your stomach to make the digestive process easier on your system.
Failing to chew your food thoroughly can lead to several digestive problems. Large food particles that aren t properly broken down may not be fully digested in the stomach, which can lead to bloating, gas, indigestion, and discomfort. In the worst cases, improper chewing can also lead to acid reflux or heartburn. This happens because larger food particles can irritate the stomach lining, causing an increase in acid production. By chewing well, you give your stomach a better chance to handle and digest food efficiently.
Digestion starts in your mouth, and the simple act of chewing your food thoroughly can have profound effects on your overall health. From reducing bloating and improving nutrient absorption to balancing blood sugar levels and promoting better gut health, proper chewing is an easy yet powerful tool for better digestion. So, next time you sit down for a meal, slow down and chew your food well - your digestive system will thank you!
It s a small habit that can lead to big results!
